Our guest speaker for the evening was Logan Poole. Every thunderstorm has lightning. Second only to flooding, lightning kills more people each year than any other storm hazard. Logan will be discussing the safety and meteorological aspect of the hazard of lightning. Specifically, Logan discussed a case study from May 27, 2017 where he was injured by lightning while working as a field meteorologist. He recollected the event through his personal notes. His recovery is still ongoing 8 years later.

Lightning strike happened while he was a field meteorologist in Turner Falls, Oklahoma. Strike happened in Turner Falls State Park. Thunderstorm was 7 miles away from where he was struck. Lightning traveled from his head and exited out both his feet. Once struck, he lost memory & usage of his legs. The strike caused him to pass out, with clothing melted to his skin. He yelled for help, but being so far out in the country, nobody could hear him. While waiting for help, he passed out many times while trying to move. His memory was hazy well beyond the strike for several days. While recovering at the hospital, he had deep channel markings on his body documented from the lightning. Logan had a video camera running when he was struck, but it was pointed away from the actual strike. He had to stay in recovery in the hospital for 3 days. He finally came home and was bed bound for a few days.

Many questions were asked during the presentation. His presentation displayed many, somewhat graphic, pictures of what lightning does to the human body. Scott was able to answer all questions and emphasized “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors”. No additional questions were asked and the meeting came to a close.

Future meetings can be conducted in person, with the option to attend virtually & speakers are still able to present virtually. Future meeting details will be sent out by Central MS NWA President Daniel Lamb.
