The fifth meeting of the 2017-2018 year took place at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Flowood, MS. Allen Lieberman was the guest speaker.

Call to Order
The last meeting of the 2017-2018 AMS/NWA chapter occurred on April 10, 2018 at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Flowood, MS. The meeting was called to order at 7:15pm by President Eric Carpenter.
Rolls
Recording Secretary Joanne Culin took note of the number present. There were 12 attendees present. A roll sheet was passed around, which also indicated those whose dues were lapsed or not.

Recording Secretary Joanne Culin summarized the meeting from the previous meeting for the group.
New Business
The amount in the treasury was $454.29 as of the start of the meeting. A total of $75 was spent on the planetarium visit for the previous meeting.
Discussion took place as to what were some potential meeting ideas for the next year. Possible future meeting ideas included: Allan Seals, a Vortex Southeast update during the year, and David Cox had a friend that worked for the Corps of Engineers.
The speaker for the evening was Al Leiberman, who spoke about pilot weather briefings. It took him two years to get his license and he has 1000 flying hours. To fly VFR, you have to see the ground and you can’t fly through a cloud deck. To fly IFR, you have to disregard feelings and trust your instruments. He discussed what each term means, as well as other pilot terms such as PIREPs, NOTAMs, etc. He explained altitude types as well. He then covered the types of weather briefings: outlook briefings, standard briefings, and abbreviated briefings. He explained why pilots get weather briefings and that is to be able to arrive at your destination in one piece. He discussed the timelines that pilots like to get their briefings at and why. He explained what were official and unofficial sources for a weather briefing, some of which are FAA approved sources. He shared how pilots get weather information before takeout and in the air. He then shared videos from several flights he was on.

The meeting concluded at 8:30pm, and it was adjourned.
