November 14, 1996 Meeting

The meeting was held at Jackson State University. The guest speaker was David Arnold, assistant professor and director of the Climatology Laboratory at Mississippi State University.

Meeting Minutes

The 14 November 1996 reorganizational meeting of the local chapter in Jackson, Mississippi, was the first meeting since the early 1980s. Elections were held and new business (including dues structure, meeting frequency and location, and local chapter activities) was discussed. Twenty-two people attended the meeting, which was held at Jackson State University (JSU). New officers elected included Paul Croft, JSU faculty, president; Alan Gerard, NWS lead forecaster, vice president; Pat Fitzpatrick, JSU faculty, treasurer; and Rusty Pfost, NWS science operations officer, secretary.

The speaker for the meeting was David Arnold, assistant professor and director of the Climatology Laboratory at Mississippi State University (MSU) in Starkville. Arnold discussed meteorology programs at MSU, which are contained in the Department of Geosciences. He described the MSU Climatology Laboratory, which was formed in 1987 to supply the university and surrounding community with real-time weather information and is the focal point of the school’s Broadcast Meteorology and Mesoscale Climatology Programs. Arnold then talked about his experiences with the North Mississippi Severe Storms Intercept Team (NOMISSIT), which is a storm-chase organization dedicated to improving the quality and timeliness of severe local storms information in the MSU area. He explained that NOMISSIT comprises about 50 MSU students and faculty. Arnold showed a videotape and a number of slides of severe storms and developing tornadoes taken in Mississippi and the Great Plains states.

January 10, 1963 Meeting

The meeting was held at the Medical Center Branch of the Deposit Guaranty Bank in Jackson. Two films were shown.

The January meeting was held at 7 PM in meeting room of the Medical Center Branch of the Deposit Guaranty Bank. Two films, “The Atmosphere and Its Circulation” and “Thunder and Lightning” were shown.

December 13, 1962 Meeting

The meeting was held at the Medical Center Branch of the Deposit Guaranty Bank in Jackson. Captain T.A. Turner, Director of Aviation for the city of Jackson was the guest speaker.

The recently formed Central Mississippi Branch of the American Meteorological Society held its regular December meeting at the Medical Center Branch of the Deposit Guaranty Bank.

Donald B. Munro, Meteorologist in Charge of the Jackson Weather Bureau presided and introduced the speaker of the evening, Captain T.A. Turner, Director of Aviation for the City of Jackson. Turner gave a progress report on the development of the new jet age airport soon to be in operation in Rankin County. The Jackson weather station will be moved to new quarters in the terminal building when operations begin.

November 8, 1962 Meeting

The second meeting of the Central Mississippi Branch of the American Meteorological Society was held at 7 PM on Thursday, November 8th the Medical Center Branch of the Deposit Guaranty Bank on the corner of North State Street and Lorenz Boulevard in Jackson.

Business included the election of officers and formal adoption of the constitution. Membership was open to anyone interested in meteorology who would agree to abide by the rules of the American Meteorological Society. Refreshments were served.

October 1962 Branch Organization Meeting

The organizational meeting of the Central Mississippi Branch of the American Meteorological Society took place in October 1962 at the U.S. Weather Bureau office in Jackson.

D.B. Munro, Meteorologist in Charge of the Jackson Weather Bureau, was chosen as temporary chairman. Alex J. Kish was named temporary secretary. Officers will be elected and a constitution adopted at the next meeting on November 8th at 7 PM.

In attendance at the meeting were Mr. Munro, Mr. Kish, Quimby M. Middleton, William T. Keating, Edwin Little, and John H. Lentz of the Jackson Weather Bureau, Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Roshore and Ernest E. McCoy of the U.S. Engineers, and Bob Neblett and Wilda Farber of WJTV.
